We here at MPF take ourselves very seriously. We’re interrogating a few of our favourite acts from this year’s festival, asking only the important questions.
Signals Midwest are playing MPF for the first time in 2022! Originally from Cleveland, they’re now spread out across Ohio, and they’re doing an absolutely insane 30-date UK/EU tour with A Wilhelm Scream, split out over the first half of 2022.
Dancing on the indie side of punk, Signals Midwest is a loud, smiling band who will captivate you on stage. We pinned down vocalist/guitarist Max Stern and mildly embarrassed him with our Northern in-jokes.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Anti-Flag at the Grog Shop, Cleveland, OH, 2003. My parents let me stay for the whole thing and everyone through the door got a free CD of The Terror State. Paint It Black also played that show, but I was 13 years old and just a little too young to appreciate it.
What have you got in your pockets right now?
Guitar picks, antihistamines, Burt’s Bees, KN95.
If you were a biscuit, what would you be and why?
I just ordered like seven boxes of Girl Scout Cookies. Make me one of those Caramel Delites. I contain multitudes.
If you were on Mastermind, what would your specialist subject be?
The Weakerthans / John K. Samson extended universe.
Who’s your favourite Dave?
Huge Dave March fan. He’s been putting serious miles in on Strava lately. Give it up for that guy. Also Dr. Dave Drayton, Ph.D, University of Technology Sydney. A wonderful friend and talented writer. And of course Dave Klyman of MPF alums Restorations. King of shred.
Cats or dogs?
Dogs. My sister’s got a dog named Pinecone. Fantastic name for a fantastic dog.
Red or blue?
Whatever the shade of purple is that Prince made everything – that.
Oasis or Blur?
Easy. Oasis has at least half a dozen undeniable hits. Blur has the “woo-hoo” song.
Related: There is a minor league baseball team just south of Philadelphia whose games I sometimes attend. They’re called the Wilmington Blue Rocks. One of their mascots is an anthropomorphic, adult human-sized piece of celery named Mr. Celery, and his theme music is “Song #2”. You can learn more here.
Too much ska or too little ska?
Always in need of more ska.
Roll / cob / bap / barm cake / batch / muffin / other (specify)?
Can I put mustard on it and eat it? Not picky here.
Where were you on 17-18th April 2015?
You can’t prove anything. My alibi is rock-solid.
Finally, which bands are you most excited to see at MPF2022?
Wilhelm Scream! Jeff Rosenstock! Misfortune Cookie! Martha! Fresh!
