We here at MPF take ourselves very seriously. We’re interrogating a few of our favourite acts from this year’s festival, asking only the important questions.
Svalbard are a ferocious post-metal band from Bristol. Post-metal on a punk festival, you say? YES because Svalbard play it with the intensity of hardcore and the bleak, dark depths of black metal. The band come with a strong political footing and existentialist roots.
They’ve been described by Metal Hammer as ‘one of the brightest sparks of UK hardcore’. They played MPF in 2019 and we’re incredibly excited to welcome them back in 2022.
We grabbed guitarist Liam Phelan to ask 12 very important questions.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Teenage Fanclub, Superchunk and The Posies in 1993.
What have you got in your pockets right now?
My hands. Typing with my nose.
If you were a biscuit, what would you be and why?
You can’t go wrong with a bourbon; dependable, dead tasty and vegan.
If you were on Mastermind, what would your specialist subject be?
Who’s your favourite Dave?
Dave Robinson, who I play with in Morrow and used to be in some shite ‘A’ rip-off band called Fireapple Red or something stupid like that.
Cats or dogs?
Red or blue?
Oasis or Blur?
Too much ska or too little ska?
Way too much.
Roll / cob / bap / barm cake / batch / muffin / other (specify)?
Where were you on 17-18th April 2015?
Not sure but, whatever it was, it probably wasn’t as fun as being at the first MPF.
Finally, which bands are you most excited to see at MPF2022?
A Wilhelm Scream, Shai Hulud and Melt Banana amongst many others.
