COUNTDOWN TO MPF: GOING OFF INTERVIEW
We’re excited to welcome local favourites Going Off back to Manchester Punk Fest in 2023.
Going Off is a brutally heavy hardcore punk band from rain city itself, known for their raucous live shows. A Going Off is gig your chance to let loose your life’s frustrations, an unrelenting display of unleashed rage. They dived onto the 2022 line-up at the last minute with an afterparty set that rattled Zombie Shack’s foundations, so we wanted to make their invite official.
These hometown darlings are also a rising star of the UK hardcore scene. They recently signed to Church Road Records to release a killer full-length album What Makes You Tick? in early 2023.
MPF sat down with Going Off’s vocalist Jake Huxley to ask 12 very important questions.
How would you introduce yourselves to a punk fan who’s not heard of you yet?
What makes you tick? What, to you, is worth going off about? What do you want to shout about? Going Off write heavy hardcore music that is driven by these questions alone. We’re an outlet for that angst and aggression these questions bring us to the point of. We’re for everybody and anybody that has something to be said. We’re for all of those that need their voice to be heard.
Which of your songs/releases are you most proud of, and why?
We have some songs on an upcoming release that really tap into what the band stands for exactly. The positive messages throughout life that need to be encouraged alongside the negative that are worth getting mad over. I’m proud of everything we’ve dropped so far, but this one specifically.
Tell us a secret about your band.
I don’t know any secrets about any of them. They’re all open books. Honesty is the best policy.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Seated at the back of the M.E.N arena in 2008 for Children of Bodom, Machine Head and Slipknot. I banged my head until my neck ached.
What have you got in your pockets right now?
My net worth – absolute fuck all
If you were a biscuit, what would you be and why?
I would be a Nice biscuit. It’s good to be nice.
Who’s your favourite Dave?
Dave from Red Dwarf.
Red or blue?
Red.
Oasis or Blur?
Oasis.
Too much ska or too little ska?
Too much for me, and that’s coming from a man who can play the trumpet.
Help us settle the age-old bread debate. Roll / cob / bap / barm / batch / muffin / other (specify)?
Barm.
Finally, which bands are you most excited to see at MPF 2023?
Electric Press & Shooting Daggers.
